What size primers for S&B 6.5mm Creed Brass

#1 Post by Hixus »

Hello all,

Still getting to grips with the reloading stuff and slowly
Picking up decent second stuff and reading all I can.

I’m at the stage now when I need to start priming my brass but can’t work out which primers I need..

The factory ammo I’ve been using and keeping brass to home load is this
6.5 mm Creedmoor Ammo by Sellier & Bellot - 140gr FMJBT

I’m not sure if posting a link is allowed.

Any guidance most appreciated and any recommendations on a primer tool also would be a help.

Many thanks

You need large rifle primers any make will do. When I bought my Ruger 6.5 Creedmoor the first thing I did was buy 100 rounds of the same ammo you are using. I didnt want to spend a chunk of money on ammo. I got good enough grouping for my level of shooting and I have re loaded the cases with out any issues.
Priming tools are a subject in them selves. Do you have a press if so what make is it. Most press come with a priming arm so you can prime on the press.
Lee do hand held and press type priming tools.
RCBS do hand priming tools.
I have lots of priming tools that I have acquired over the years. I am currently messing with one of the Lee tools I tend to throw it across the room on occasions but all ways on some thing cushioned. I am determined to get it to work I have tweaked it quite a bit and to be honest it works 90% of the time.
You need to decide how you want to do it. On the press or as a separate stage.
Its OK to post pictures of ammo and ammo boxes and even your re loading set up. Its a shooting forum after all.

I use a Lee Auto Prime XR hand priming tool (with the square tray), it took a little bit of time to get used to but now it works a treat and allows you to "feel" the primer seating.

As Alpha said above, you need to decide how you want to do it and see what works for you.I prime a batch of cases, usually 20, at a time as my first step in the sequence and put them to one side and then reload each case one at a time so I am only working with one case at a time if that makes sense.

The latest upgrade for the Lee Ergoprime is good.....it' a triangular tray and the exasperation/throwing across room rate is very low on mine.

Thanks gents! A lot of confusion typically you’d ask in your local club.
I have a hornady L-N-L press.
I’ll do a bit of research and invest I scout the second hand stuff and try and pick up reloading stuff gradually. I’ve still got a few pieces to get before I can load from start to finish.

This is one of those very rare occasions when I am going to say avoid something, avoid the Lyman primer tool. It simply did not come up to expectations for me. Also, avoid using your reloading press for priming as they do give you a great deal of feel.

I use a Forster co-ax, some modified RCBS and an old Lee for my priming with the RCBS set up for specific cartridge types.
