Where to test loads?

Hi All

Hopefully a quick and easy one! I shoot 223 in F/TR, or at least I am slaving away to get it working right :-)

I have recently moved to the Midlands (Daventry), and I need somewhere to test loads, and most importantly chrono them. I know I can use Bisley @ 100y to test, but AFAIK I can't use a chrono there (not seen one being used so am assuming, called the range office but got very-unhelpful voicemail).

When I lived in Reading I just used to use one of the vermin shooting permissions I had with a suitable backstop and setup the chrono there, but I haven't got anywhere to shoot in the field in the Midlands as yet.

Where do you all chrono and test loads? Need to get some real data in!

I've had some success with the 80.5 Bergers and the 90 Berger VLDs, and now need to get some velocity data to know where to go from here - guesstimates are not the best thing to go on!

You can Chrono on Short Siberia at Bisley without problems, just get set up early. Watch out as you may well become everyone' new best friend if you have a Chrono set up! Another very good alternative is Kynamco at Mildenhall who have a 100m tunnel range so no wind to worry about, they have a chrono as well but you are probably better off taking your own. From memory the range fee is GBP30/Hr

You are gauranteed perfect test conditions at Kynamco and it is an easyish drive from you as well.

Thanks guys, that's really helpful! Ovenpaa, presumably you mean just get setup before the hooter goes, and then retrieve gear after it goes for the finish at the end of the session?

I'm having a look at the link you posted now as well - looks incredibly useful, though cost may make me wince!

The tunnel range is pricey and I personally dislike the lighting, or more to the point my eyes struggle with it for some reason, I think if you are well prepared you can get a lot done in 60 minutes and you are not going to be distracted by other shooters.

For Bisley yes just set up the chrono before the hooter goes. I have found that you can usually move forward the ten feet to adjust it if needed as long as you choose a lull in the shooting and speak to the other shooters.

We shoot just south of Cambridge at 800-1200 yards and again you usually set a Chrono up if needed.

Oundle have 25, 50 and 100 yard ranges, we can use chronos there depending on how busy it is due to a club rule of having adjacent lanes not in use whilst a chrono is on the range, but this is normally easily done.

Try Minsterly Ranges used to be a member there,very good for load development you can reload just behind firing points.If you go on a weekend there will be plenty of target shooters there to help you out.You might have a word with owner he still holds the record for benchrest at 100m,hope this helps
