The effect of REACH and reloaders powders

#1 Post by Sim G »

So no doubt like many others, the EU ban on some shooters powders is a real concern. Well for me anyway. I have two favourite powders that I use for a few calibers and in certain ones, it’s my only choice! So since the news broke, I’ve been picking it up wherever I can. I’ve just found out another dealer has a couple of pounds of H335 he’s put by for me....

I might have become a bit obsessive....

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Where does it actually state "including primers and loaded rounds" ? Is it spelt out somewhere in the regs, or is it an urban myth propagated by the "they're coming to take your guns away" brigade.?
I've only seen references to shooters powder and black powder...........typically 1 kg of powder = approx 330 rds of 308 , which weigh 8 kgs, so if you're loading for multiple events in a competition, you could easily be way over the top.

It's not the weight of the loaded ammunition, only the weight of the powder contained in the case and the primer.

I wouldn't be so sure. The Explosives Regulations 2014 are extremely poorly written and open to several interpretations:

7.—(1) Subject to paragraph (2), no person may store explosives unless that person holds a licence for their storage and complies with the conditions of that licence.

(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply to—

(a)the storage of one or more of the following—

(i)no more than 10 kilograms of shooters’ powder;

(ii)no more than 5 kilograms of—

(aa)shooters’ powder; or

(bb)any hazard type 3 or 4 explosive, or desensitised explosive, which is not a relevant explosive, or a combination of hazard type 3 or 4 explosives, or desensitised explosives, which are not relevant explosives; or

(cc)a combination of shooters’ powder and any hazard type 3 or 4 explosives, or desensitised explosives, which are not relevant explosives;

(iii)no more than 15 kilograms of percussion caps or small arms ammunition or a mixture of them;

You could interpret that you are allowed 10Kg of Powder + 15Kg of primers and ammunition from the above. But Ovenpaa's 15Kg total is probably safest.
