Remy 700 308 stock choice/recoil

#1 Post by Charlie J »

Taking muzzle brakes , moderators , and shoulder worn recoil pads out of the question does stock choice and weight make a difference with recoil .
For example is an Accuracy Int. stock better at absorbing some of the recoil than say an MDT .
In short whats best for recoil reduction if any ?
Thanks Chas

Mass will be a key factor into felt recoil, a heavier rifle will recoil less than a lighter one all things being the same. But the chassis/stock design always plays a part in disturbing felt recoil.

The MDT chassis systems do not come with a butt stock, you will have to buy and fit an AR-15 style butt pad.

I used to use and AICS (the one I have for sale) on my Remington 700 chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua and the rifle weighed around 1 stone. The rifle now sits in an MDT Tac21 with an MDT skeleton butt pad, per picture attached. The weight of the rifle was unchanged, give or take some ounces. The felt recoil is improved when using the MDT chassis versus the AICS. Whatever butt pad the skeleton stock uses absorbs/distributes the recoil quite well and I can keep my scope on target when doing those longer range shots.

Good shouldering of the rifle is important too, if you don't have it tight into your shoulder the rifle will bounce around etc.

I do know that we replaced the Hogue over molded stock on the clubs .308 Howa, with a laminated wood stock. The rifle behaved completely differently, it just seemed to soak up the recoil.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?
