Ah now there is the question? it means it was proofed, not when manufactured. Could also be a re proof when it arrived in the UK, could be alot older or yes as a new rifle in 1998 been proofed before being sold in the UK. No real way of knowing.

in fact my Marlin has an LP over 03 but serial number shows it to be manufactured in 2001
and a Ruger 10/22 has an NP over B6 with serial number shows manufactured in 1996
Oh well, not knowing the exact age doesn't diminish the enjoyment
