iv tried doing an internet search but sadly my google fu is poor and all i can come up with is that its a pre- taurus/ pre safety catch model, the only site iv found to date the rifle is in the US and it asks for the serial number, then shows nothing matching

I’m presuming a 24” barrel? If so, it may be just over 20 years old or younger. I remember this as they were being written up in the U.K. gun press at the time and I had to wait in order for one to come into the country as they were new and I had just received the compensation payment for the seizure of my handguns...
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Can't remember the details, but there is a date code on the proof marks.

If you think you are a person of some importance, try ordering someone else's dog around.

Would that not indicate a “1957” date, which surely couldn’t be right...

tried that, it appears that rossi have had so many manufactures/factories over the years that they only hold current records

Have same problem dating my Amadeo Rossi. Its a round barrel SS in 45colt.
I think Sim G is probably right in saying 20 years or slightly less. Mine was, I think, bought new by the previous owner after he got paid out for his pistols (according to other club members), I then bought several of his firearms when he packed up altogether, unfortunately he can't remember when he got them.
As you can see, it has a London proof mark, but what does the LP 98 stand for ( 1998? or is that just too easy).
