Rebarrelling

I have a lovely Remington LTR. Bloody expensive guns, but, generally they do what they say on the tin. Except, I bought mine because of the caliber. Not your usual .308 or .223, but 6.8SPC! I was convinced to give it a try by a mate who extols the virtues of the cartridge, but unfortunately, he’s dead wrong to my mind. The cartridge is pretty much a lame duck for me. I reckon .223, in any guise, is better!

So it’s languishing in my cabinet and on a recent thread about the 6x45, bambam mentions the .224 Valkyrie. I was aware of the cartridge making an arrival, but that’s it, so I started to have a little look at it. Well, could the hype be believed? They reckon it’s the “Creedmoor for ARs”! And the cartridge is based on..... the 6.8mm REM SPC!

So could this be the answer to my little LTR? I’ve never had a rifle rebarreled. I’ve promised myself for the last two years that when my RPA in 7mm-08 is shot out, I’ll have that rebarrelled in 6.5 CM, but I just can’t shoot it out! It keeps going!

But, if I was wanting to put a .224 Valkyrie barrel, some 24” long of a medium, fluted profile, who should I get to do the work? Assuming they would have the facility to chamber it, what barrel make should I choose? My RPA wears an Archer, and that is really good! Any idea on what such a job should cost?

What about David at the shooting shed.
There are lots of competent rifle builders out there. First thing I would do is check to see if any one is local to you. Are reamers available or would you need to get one cut. A barrel blank should not be a problem.
I don't think it would be a difficult job for a competent smith. It's whether you are prepared to take the risk on the cartridge or go with a tried and tested one.

Give Dave a ring at Valkyrie Rifles, he’s rebarelled a number of rifles for me and I would personally recommend his work.
He recently took delivery of a .224 Valkyrie reamer and has already built a rifle on this calibre, so will be able to answer any questions you have first hand.

I have had a rifle made by him around 2 years ago, a simple blueprinted Remington 700 chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua where he used a Border barrel. It was a 28" heavy barrel with a bead blasted finish, but I believe he is capable of different finishes including barrel fluting.
