Reloading Powder Choices

Thank you all for the posts, as I said, been out of it for quite a while.

I think I will just restart with Vihtavuori and stay there. I do load black powder but I am not that fussed where it comes from.

Vihtavuori N32C "Tinstar".

A smidgen slower but made for the same purpose, CAS loads.

Evidently "Evil Roy" really rates it but then I would have thought Mike Beliveau would have shot him by now.

Personally I prefer N320, but then I am no fan of "artificially bulky" powders.

Dromia, sorry to intrude, but could you elaborate.. when my trailboss runs out I am also going to have to develop a new load.

You reference two powders, one sounds like a direct is, replacement, the other you prefer and dislike artificially bulky powders.

As a newbie, why do you prefer yours?

Slightly faster, has never let me down in calibres from 17 Hornet to 45-70 and if I have to rely on a bulky to powder as my protection from a multiple charge then I really shouldn't be re-loading.

I am not concerned about double loading as my method means I throw a load, eyeball it (as is is a straight case this is easy) and seat the bullet before moving to the next case.

Hence, no squib loads or double loads will ever happen!

Out of interest, why the dislike of artificial bulk powders, and what do you mean by artificial?

Powder manufacturers charge the same pound for pound for powder that uses inert ingredients to bulk them up as they do for those that don't.
What that means is you pay up to twice as much to load each cartridge.

I have been using Maxam shotgun powders for reduced loads on our restricted mv/me range. CSB5 around burn rate of Red /Green Dot....PSB2 around burn rate of Unique...priced around £40 a kilo...Maxam also do a rifle powder around N133 burn rate...£74 a kilo....not tried it yet.

11gns of PSB2 under a cast or plated bullet in .308 gives me a 10 round one hole group at 50m and a sub moa group at 100yds...it is a bulky, square flake powder...meters well. Also shoots well in every calibre I have tried....222, .223, 30/30 ,
7.5x55, 44-40... etc

Maxam supply the powders to Eley for shotgun cartridges...I think they own Eley.

I generally use Vit powders for Bisley loads.

Hodgdon's/IMR Trail Boss does this and it is a real scam with you only getting 9 ozs, to be fair to Vihtavuori their Tin Star is at the same price as their other pistol powders for 1 1/10th lbs

I have had good results using RS50 in 308W,303, and 223, loading's are almost the same as Vhitavouri 140.
