.45/70 Reloading with Trailboss

#1 Post by pbrazendale »

Hi all,

New Henry chambered in .45/70 arriving Wednesday, looking at loading up some rounds using Trail boss for indoor gallery use.

I’ve got GM 405gr bullets and starline brass cases, using large rifle primers does anyone have any recommended loads with Trail Boss?

It’s not listed in my Lyman 50th so thought I’d ask for recommendations, also as it’s being used in a lever gun is it a good idea to factory crimp like I do for my .357?

Thanks all

I would look up IMR's own data as a starting point, it is on the netty.

What's your indoor ranges safety specs? Most, if ratified by the NSRA, will have a ME limit decreed at 475ft/lbs maximum. A very modest sub sonic load of 900fps with a 405gn bullet will give almost 730ft/lbs....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Yes, crimp your rounds as per your 357 and don't use pointy bullets in a tubular magazine.

Sim, maximum MV for all powders is 1706 ft/s and maximum ME for all powders is 1045 ft/lbs so as long as I’m within that then no issues.

I’ve had a look on the IMR website but .45/70 isn’t listed under Trail Boss loads it goes to a max calibre of .416 Rem Mag.

Go to the Hodgdon Reloading Center menu driven website

http://www.hodgdonreloading.com

Use the drop down cartridge menu and select 45-70 and click Hodgdon powders and your bullet weight. (Specify 'Hodgdon' propellants, not 'IMR' for some reason.)

The 'Trapdoor Springfield' dataset for a 405gn cast LFP and Trail Boss is starting load 12.0gn for 971 fps, maximum 13.0gn for 1,007 fps from a 24-inch barrel. Both loads' MEs are under 1,000 ft/lb.

If you like TB, get a supply in quick - there will be no more imported after early 2018 thanks to REACH.

I use 13 grains of trail boss from memory for a nice easy shooting load with magnum primers.
