For me it's about keeping what's left of my mind busy, I can spend hours doing case-prep, SS tumbling (sometimes not even my cases!), looking up what toys to buy next trip over the pond etc.etc.
And of course there's the cost savings (I know don't start!) but at least when my son goes with me and blats off 100 rounds of 308 it's costing me a lot less than buying them!
This weekend we have two shoots, an all-day at Otterburn on Saturday and a 1/2 day at Ponteland Sunday morning, knowing how much we shoot at Otterburn the barrels will probably still be warm when we go to Ponteland the next day

Truthfully? Nothing. It's a chore that competes with other activities. I reload to bring costs down so I can afford to practice. If I can buy factory re-loaded ammo for only a small premium on doing it myself (and lately that's actually been possible), the reloading equipment sits unused. I haven't pulled the handle on a press in a couple of years now.
Having said that, I am about to retire so that small premium may prove too much soon, and I will have more free time, so the reloading is almost certainly going top be worthwhile again.
Simple.. a startling improvement in accuracy over factory loads in my .357
And, a great reason to spend last sunday morning watching programmes of my choice for 4 hours in the mancave (shed) without comment from Mrs Hrun or a reminder of the chores that needed doing

Entering the world of Alchemy... Purifying (cleaning brass), concocting and perfecting (by trial and error) the perfect blend of chemicals (powder), and metals (FMJ's), to produce an end product capable of killing a piece of cardboard (target) at a distance of 1/8 of a league away (approx. 375yds).

I guess baking is not dissimilar to handloading. You buying the ingredients separately to bake a cake which is much better and cheaper than a store bought cake!
