The American Civil War was a real boom time for the British gun trade.
Interestingly there is more information available about the mid nineteenth century British gun trade in US research about their Civil War that there is British.
For anyone interested in this I can heartily recommend Barry and Burt's "Suppliers to the Confederacy" volumes 1 & 2. As a good starting point.
