Romanian AKM 7.62 x 39

#1 Post by pbrazendale »

Guys,

I'm picking a Romanian AKM up from Oleg tomorrow, just wondered from those of you who own them if there's anything i need to do around breaking in or must do's before I take it out?

Or is it simply just load an fire?

Secondly I've got some Chinese 7.62 x 39 ammo but it's on stripper clips, will these work with the steel AK mags? Or do I need an adapter?

Thanks in advance.

If its anything like my Cugir that was NIB, you'll have to do a full strip down and wash in solvent to get rid of the "cosmoline" type grease that it comes in....

I bought 2-3 litres of white spirit and dunked it in that to get rid of the majority, then brushes and rags to finish off.... give a good oil, re-assemble and you're good to go...

I've never had ammo in stripper clips, but I don't think it will fit directly into a mag so you'll need an adaptor.

Take the rounds out of the stripper clips and load mag.

Yes give a good clean before shooting it, and after you have shot it because the Chinese 7.62 x 39 ammo seems to be leave the barrel very dirty, not as clean burning as the Russian milsurp ammo.

As said give it a good clean, mine also had quite a bit of Cosmoline in it, good old WD40 will get rid of it.

Never run an AK in, just load up and crack on.......on the subject of loading 7.62x39 AK mags do not load from stripper clips. The stripper clips the Chinese ammo is on are probably SKS carbine (Chinese Type 56 carbine) strippers, the Chinese loved the SKS and issued four for every AK they issued. The 5.45x39 AK-74 mags can be loaded from stripper clips as they come with a little adapter that attaches to the magazine.

You may need to zero it, below is a link to a site that gives everything you need to know about AK sights and how to zero the correctly......

https://savannaharsenal.com/2016/04/23/ ... -47-ak-74/

Moving the front sight left, right, up, or down 1mm changes the point-of-impact 26 centimeters at 100 meters from the target. One full turn of the front sight post moves the point-of-impact 20 centimeters when firing at 100 meters.

One other thing, if you shoot Russian or Chinese milsurp through it be sure to flush the barrel with warm water and clean throughly as the primers are corosive.Although the chamber and barrel are chrome-lined and as tough as old boots if left and it corrodes you don't have the luxury of going to the section armoury for a new one so best to clean it as soon as.......I clean mine ever time it is shot and after nearly five years and many thousands of rounds, all Russian milsurp, the barrel etc is still like new.

Nice AKM laminate you have there, any Arsenal stamps on the stock or lower handguard?.

If the handguard and stock have been issued they sometimes have a serial number on the lower handguard and often have various stamps on top of the wrist of the stock, may be single numbers or a number in a diamond and some have a small square or similar which shows they've been through an Arsenal refurb.

Common refurb marks, it says artillery but also applies to small arms.....

Ok checked it over completely and can't find any markings unfortunately, also there is no trace of cosmoline on the rifle, it looks as if it's got some sort of spray lubricant maybe oil on it, I'm going to take it apart tonight and ballistol it and put a jag and brush down the barrel, the magazine however does have thick brown grease in it so that will need pulling apart and again going over with ballistol, anything else I should be doing?
