There's two sides to every story and we've just had one here.

As I said, I've heard the story direct from the person concerned......

And I must also say, I also (as did another FAC holder with the Met) say some months back to this person around the time that the app was going in, that 7 might be pushing it on first app, even though he's a long established existing SGC holder, and to be prepared to be knocked back to 4 or 5....just on the basis of what we've seen elsewhere etc.
That wasn't taking into account the 'rules' of the club though, which does seem a little onerous in my personal view from reading this thread, and I'm glad I joined a club that isn't like that at all and wants people to enjoy shooting for fun.

The shooting activities are structured and fun. There are essential firearms required for turning targets, practical and mini service shooting. The revolver and pistol are essentially adjuncts. However, if the club is running a practical and/or turning target shoot with lever action or semi-automatic carbine in the am period (with alternative courses of fire for different guns) we may run the afternoon session with handguns. Not much fun for those without them who are merely spectators.

The applicant is simply exercising his right.

Out of interest, you claimed originally that all members must take part in all club activities. What if they don't want to? They simply don't find certain disciplines appealing? Do they get binned?

Like I said, very onerous, and I'm glad I found a club that is nothing of the sort.

New applicants can see what we do. How the club functions is explained to them. If it's not for them there are other clubs in the area which may or may not accommodate them. It's really that simple.

I don't think its worth causing to much fuss, I'm with Met and on first grant put in for 4 even though I knew at the time I needed more, so added a few mods, giving me 7 slots, bought 3 rifles in first week as soon as FAC arrived.

Immediately joined NRA as full member due to centre fire pistol calibre on ticket and e-mailed FEO stating that I'd had a change to planned shooting disciplines and was going to put in a 1-4-1 for a couple of full bore rifles. No problem was the reply as long as it was justified. Variation put in for a 223 and 308 enclosing copy of NRA card and new ticket back a week later, a week or so later joined a new club who do some CSR with classic rifles so put in another variation for 303 and again ticket back in a week.

So Met turnround on variations is quick and is probably his best bet to get all he wants/needs within a couple of months. Otherwise I suspect they will hold up initial grant due to arguments and issues being raised.

Have also recently done a paid variation for another 6 slots which came back in 5 days, so in 15 months have now got 13 slots, and all were done with no issues.

Last 3 people in our club to get initial grants with the Met (in past 2 years or so and one only a few months ago) were all processed in 8-10 weeks from posting form to receiving FAC in post (one for 4 slots, and other two for 5 slots with one a mod)

The law still applies whether its a variation or a new application.

And that is exactly what is being exercised. FACs are issued at the discretion of the Chief of Police (as deligated) as per primary legislation, firearms rules and guidance....
