Uberti .357

#1 Post by pbrazendale »

Hi all,

I recently got a .357 Uberti 1873, photos in another thread, as someone relatively new to firearms I wanted to ask a few questions:

1) before use do in need to lubricate anything? If so what and with that lubrication?

2) following shooting do I need to clean the rifle? If so what with and where?

3) the action currently isn't overly smooth, will this get slicker with use or does it need lube?

Thanks in advance

A few light drops of gun oil dropped down the edges of the brass lifting block and into the lever pivot is all I do.

Yes, clean it after every use, usual method for me, cleaner on a patch on a jag and up the bore etc., then dry patch it through.
I use cowboy action loads, and in .45LC they are quite dirty, so I give the swab out the brass lifting block after a squirt of Ballistol into there.

The action will start to slick up as you use it. As I said in the other thread, once you put 500-600 rounds through if you want it really slick, take it to A&A Gunsmiths for one of their action jobs (and short stroke kit if your feeling flush)
I've tried a few of their 1873's once done, and I'll be getting them to work their magic on mine in a few months time.

If you are using cast bullets go to the library section look up Edds red make yourself a batch up. Use that to clean your barrel use it like any other bore cleaner. A light oiling as the previous poster suggests is all you need don't over do it. The action will slick up with use.

1 - lifter needs lubing down the long edges (I use ballistol spray), bit of spray on the cocking rod and the one that pushes the
cartridges home.

2 -after shooting, it's worth running an lubed swab down the mag tube, as that can rust up if you look at it wrong. other than that, i don't do much else, just a wipe down.

3 - use it, then make a choice after a good few 100 rounds. it should slick up some, but A&A go beyond what just using will do.

As the cartridge lifter is brass it will bed in quite quickly. Unless you are going in for rapid fire competitions, the slicking work is not necessary and will probably invalidate your guarantee.

I've never used lubricant on the inside of the action. It only attracts debris and Shi'ite and will gun up a gun in small order, also risking scoring and gouging the moving parts. The only thing that really smooths up a lever action is a little wear. That won't take long with the brass lifter and toggle action if an Uberti Henry/'66/or '73.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Just remember to remove any lubricant from the bore before shooting.
