scope choice

Lately been looking for some scopes for my .17hmr and .223, on the .17 I have a 3.9x40 vintage Japanese scope ,on the .223 there is a budget Nikko 4.12x50 both need to be zeroed in, so on the 100yds target I placed 30mm orange sticker which I can see, but thru the scope still see it but could not see the hits yet the guy next to me could thru his and was spotting the .17 with the 3.9x40 ,the other guy did not know what his scope was or power,being an ol'geezer wearing specs would a 4.16.40/50 or 6.24x50 8x56 be a big advantage for 100/200 yards I have a .22 with 3.9x40 but 25yds at the club is no fun any more, I did buy a 4.16x50 but sent it back as there was particles inside the reticle lens (looked like lint fluff) so never fitted to a rifle ,I am restricted to a budget so difficult as to what's available, most are in from China nowadays.Mel

You really need a spotting scope to pick up .22 hits at 100 yds. The 3-9x40 must have been top quality to pick up .22 hits at 100....especially on a standard black target.
I have a Bausch and Lomb 4-15 x50 ....top quailty glass but struggle to spot .22 hits at 100 yds...at 200 yds forget it.
No problem with .30 cal.
Just get a spotting scope.

Mike95 thanks for reply I use 30mm orange stickers and I have a spotting scope on order albeit secondhand £25 but from a quality camera shop, out of interest Harrowden Gun Club where is that pls.
