First Slug Loads

#1 Post by Grizzly »

I had quite a few bits and pieces left over from a plan to reload shotshell and due to the lack of components available in the UK for reloading slug decided I may as well try and use what I had to cast and reload slug. I followed as best I could the load data from the following forum and melted down my lead shot and cast using a Lyman 525gn Sabot mould:

https://www.shootersforum.com/shotguns- ... -slug.html

I made 4 test loads all using Remington STS 209 primers, used Gamebore Velocity Hulls, Gualandi V-Zero VO25 wads and a 525gr Sabot slug

Loads were Herco 23gn, 25gn, 30gn and Unique 23gn

They all performed safely. No signs of over pressure on the hulls and the wads seemed to work well and seperate/land at about 20-30yards. I couldn't find any wads that were deformed, petals spread nicely and none of the slugs seemed to tumble. I was shooting at around 50 yards

30gn of Herco felt a little too hot and 23gn not hot enough. By far the best group was 25gn of Herco with a 5 shot group and one flyer. Unique performed ok but didn't seem to group as well. I'm going to work around these two loads and see what I get at 100 yards for next time.

My load for Unique is 20gr with the same slug.
Runs great in the 870 & most accurate on the day shooting against Lee key-slug offerings.

Still to find a 10-bore slug mold though!

Thanks. Will give 20-22gn a go then. My Lee mould broke when casting so threw it away and more than happy with the accuracy of the Lyman.

Don't know if these guys can make a custom mould:

Already have a couple of options...sticking with the Lyman Sabot design but looking at getting a double or triple cavity mold instead.

Not decided on the 10-bore route yet, as need more research & then see what the consensus is on the American Slug Shooters forum & similar sites.
