Lapua 6.5x284 brass or winchester 284 brass

#1 Post by Berger »

I was looking on brownells uk and noticed the 284 winchester brass is available be it expensive.i did once read on accurate shooter 284 winchester brass was rated the best by some.this may have been before lapua my 6.5x284 brass.i would still have to neck turn it if it's thicker than 14 thousandths as my 284 has a .315 neck.am I better off sticking with the lapua and expanding then turning or use the winchester brass.cheers Berger

My preference is always Lapua for any brass if at all possible an I have simply run a mandrel through to produce .284 brass. Well it is a tad more complicated than that as I then neck size a a final stage before first firing.

Wait until you get into the true wildcats, I have spent the best part of 30 minutes or more on some cases once you have added the operations together :)

Look out for the new Norma 284 brass. I would guess that March Scopes UK will be bringing it in.

The old 284 Winchester brass was very poor (25 years ago) but possibly it has improved meanwhile.

what calibre are you prepping for . question
Now my k&m neck turner is set to trim my 284 necks to 14 thousandths case neck wall can I assume that my next lot of new brass will cut the same after expanding.cheers Berger

A whole host of things, the current ones include batches of 9mm-08 and 22-6,5x47 again.

Never heard of a 9mm 08.it sounds almost a strait wall case.you obviously like tinkering in the gunroom.i do too but I would be prefer to spend more time out shooting than in the gunroom these days.ive got hundreds of each cases fully prepped ready to load.i tend not to load big batches anymore.i keep so many loaded for hunting and maybe a week before a club day make up enough for so many COF'S. I've found the more I take the more I shoot.i limit myself a bit nowadays.having 2 calibres with relatively short barrel life I want to make them last so to give myself time to save for another barrel.

I 'tinker in the gunroom' for a living. Luckily I have access to a reasonable amount of land to shoot over plus a range that is open 24/365 and is only 20 minutes away, Christmas day was spent with a variety of rifles from Rimfire to a 6,5-54M-Sch, Boxing day was beating followed the next day by Clays at Brandesburton and it will be Pigeon tomorrow evening

Being married to a keen shooter means finding a reason or place to shoot is never a problem :)
