Hi Gun Pimp Naw think u missed the opening gambit of the thread so dont agree. The original post clearly said:Gun Pimp wrote:I don't see the relevance that your Madco is more accurate than your Lothar Walther barrel at 1000 yards. What's your definition of accuracy?hitchphil wrote:Not always true - my 308's - 1 in12 twist 26" Madco on a Swing action bedded into an Anschutz 1813 wooden stock is more accurate at 1000yds than my 30" 1 in 13 Walther barrel on an RPA / HPS rifle. ..... & its the other way round at 300yds.If you want to go the extra distance - out to 1000 yards - then a longer barrel is really needed.
Many long range shooters go for higher twist with shorter barrel length (but pay for it in increased wear rates).
If we are talking about competitive FTR - which I thought we were - then to be competitive, you will need to match the ballistics of your competitors - they will all be using 30 - 32 inch barrels and pushing their 155s at 3000 fps plus.
Tell me when anyone won a 1000 yard FTR League shoot with a 26 inch barrel!
My definition of accuracy is MOA (or fractions of) in the elevation more than wind axis & my 26" Swing is better because its a higher twist? poss? but it is- just better than my RPA 30”1in13 etc etc ?build a nice step for shooting F/TR, we are only talking club level as i don't have the time, skill or money to be worth competing
So I had listed 2 rifles on Gunstar that fit that seem to bill & leave £ change to scope it etc. Lots of good stuff on scopes that I am not competent to comment on, & then some debate on budget FTR & barrel length was introduced; & my point is for what Paxtond was looking for a in a compromise? - the first is a 32" heavy barrel the 2nd with a 30" heavy either would suffice. Ovenpaa added that longer barrel will help with wind as higher MV will be less affected & that is true but wind or horizontal axis variation is also down to the ability to read it (sadly I’m not a great role model here!). But in my definition elevation consistency I bet there isn’t that much between a 26 & a 32" barrel (I define that as statistically significant & the null hypothesis is disproved & P <0.05 tesnews ). I never suggested using a 26" TR vs. a 32” heavy barrel - but I strongly suggest a good TR action with a decent barrel - QED?
