Russian 54r milsurp experiment.....

#1 Post by snayperskaya »

Had some time to spare earlier so I pulled 20 150gr Russian milsurp rounds, resized the case, weighed the powder and reloaded them to the average and reseated the bullets with a light crimp.

Will have to see if they shoot any better than "out of the can" rounds.

Comrade Snayperskaya,

You have failed to file a report with the Sett's Commissar detailing, in triplicate, the weight of each individual bullet, case and powder charge, the COAL, seating depth and the same data for your 'average' reloaded specification. We are sure this is an oversight. Be pleased to relay this data immediately such that we might save our Siberian Sett the trouble of preparing a hole for you.

When you say resized is that F/L resize, with the decap pin removed I'm guessing, what was it like resizing steel cases ? How much powder was in them out of interest ?

Heskith-Pritchard describes the same practice on the Western Front to great effect...
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I have done the same thing before I also did the same with some 8mm milsurp stuff. I might still have my notes some were.

I would also be interested to hear how much of a powder weight variance there was between cartridges.

Neck sized with a Lee Loader, no harder to do than brass as the case neck had hardly altered by removing the bullets.Powder weight was pretty consistent to be fair, ranged from 49.3gr to 49.8gr and the average for the 20 rounds was 49.5gr and the bullet weight varied by less than a grain across all 20.Seating depth was set to the same overall length as the original rounds.
