As the title says is it possible to neck turn on a lathe or do I have to buy all the gubbings.
I'm thinking a 6.5 drill reversed and chucked up in the tail stock. The case held in a collet using the 6.5 drill shank as a mandrel.
What do you think. Is the conventional cutter profiled to champher the shoulder or does it just take a straight cut along the length of the neck.
Failing that were would you buy neck turning stuff and how much is it likely to cost to get set up.
Is it possible to neck turn on a lathe.

I checked out YouTube it can be done but its probably easier with the proper tools I guess.

You can do it. It's only really viable if you are doing a lot of cases. The first job is to turn-up a sacrificial mandrel - which will be scrap once you take it out of the chuck.
I do a lot of neck-turning and a decent neck-turner works best.

As TGP says, machine a sacrificial mandrel and throw it away once it has been taken out of the chuck as it will never return correctly. I have a few custom cutters ground for specific shoulder angles, I doubt they have seen the light of day in the last three years, these days I use a Sinclair neck turner however other makes are available :)
About the only thing I make for them is dedicated mandrels in .0005" steps as the neck tension of different makes of brass can mean a slightly different ID. I probably have in excess of 30 mandrels for sizing and turning with a Sinclair die and neck turner that are used with the brass I drill and tap for OAL gauges,

At the moment you're still only guessing that that is the issue, get it looked at by a competent gunsmith or preferably speak to the previous owner or the one who chambered it originally to find out exactly what it was set up for, if it was for a certain bullet weight and profile neck turning won't help.
There's room for all Gods creatures, next to the mash and gravy :)
Re: Is it possible to neck turn on a lathe.
I don't know who built the rifle I do know who the the previous owner was. I have a set of dummy cartridges supplied by him with reloading data. All the bullets are seated short. I'm prepared to give neck turning a go before writing the rifle off at the moment I'm not enjoying this gun at all.
I have never had a day out with it with out issues. If the worst comes to the worst the action can be reused I'll just ditch the barrel.
I don't know of any competent gun smiths in the North East of England.
Any way that's enough of that moving on rapidly this thread is about neck turning were do I get neck turning gear from. Preferably in the Uk.

It is possible to neck turn in the lathe I did it to night. It was a bit rough and ready but it can be done. I would probably buy a proper set up if I was going to give it a go though.
