Best 600 mard 308 bullet

#1 Post by meles meles »

So, oomans, what do you recommend as a good all round 600 mard bullet ? (A smack on the snout awaits the first eejit to call 'em heads). Is it worth forking out a zillion pounds for a box of Bergers, or will PPU do just fine for a club level shoot ? Maybe cast are good enough at 600 mards ?

155gr bullets will do the job quite nicely. In my experience I have found the Sierra Matchking and Lapua Scenar's to perform the best. The lapua bullets tend to be more readily available and as mag pointed out, reasonably priced. I buy mine by the thousand which drops the price quite dramatically.

I've found Nosler Custom Competition to be very good and cheaper if you get them from Germany etc.

I'd avoid PPU, I tried the 174 & 175gr in .30 and found them to be very inconsistent in both weight and size, the 168gr "Match" were OK for plinking (but not up to match standard by any means) but I can get Noslers cheaper and they are much better.

Just for hell of it I bought 100 of their 6.5 139gr, ran 30 of them through my Ruger RPR with various charge loads, best group at 100yds was just over 2.5" **** ****

Those 139gr Privi bullets are only really useful for 6.5 Swedish with M96 Mauser's. Agree with the inconsistencies, they aren't that great with my 303 and are terrible for my 8mm Mauser.

Were they the .311" PPU bullets you used in the .303?.....I tried some for the 54r recently and they were pretty good with 45.5gr of Viht N140 behind them.

They were one and the same, yes. I find the Sellior and Bellot 180gr are more consistent and similarly priced. I've got 200x 174gr SMK I've yet to try out. I got them at a good price but don't think I'll manage to find anymore below £30 per hundred.

I might have to try some of those Sellior&Bellot, once I've tried the 180gr Egyptian lead core military bullets I've got :good:
