"Lending" a Shotgun for Repair

Hello, all.

Now, you'll have to forgive me: I'm more of a firearm shooter than a shotgun shooter.

I handed my shotgun in to the local gunshop for repairs this morning and the shop kept it for inspection; they entered it on their inventory and gave me a receipt* etc.

Now, my question is: do I have to let the Police know they've got my shotgun? I mean, I trust these guys; they're a well-known gunshop that's been around for ages. I asked the guy in the shop who said I didn't have to speak to the police. But I dunno, I just want to check really.

*I did have to ask for a receipt though, one wasn't forthcoming. Though I feel this is more to do with a casual attitude on the part of the shop, and not so much a "dodgy dealing".

No, if its at an RFD's you don't need to do anything.

There's no difference between a S1 and S2 firearm for the circumstances you've given. You'd only inform the police if there was a transfer of ownership. Always worth getting a receipt though so you can 'prove' where the gun is if you got a surprise inspection while its away.

Put two S1 shotguns in for some 'smithing' recently and when I e-mailed my FEO he told me I needn't inform him unless I expected them to be away for a considerable length of time. I said "two weeks?" - he said "more like two months". Still, I did drop him a mail to tell him which RFD they were with and the date when I dropped them off.

You've NOT "loaned" it, it's with an RFD.....completely different legal status.

Definitely no requirement to inform the police.

There are many shotgun owners who will lodge their guns with an RFD for storage either for days, weeks or months at a time and either collect them or have them delivered when they are off on a shoot. Can you imagine the amount of work it would cause if they had to notify the police every time they put the gin in ot took it out of storage!
