1000 yard rifle ?
Been shooting out to 1000yards at Bisley with a 308 but watched a couple of shooters with 6.5 make it look easy ,actually had a go with a 6.5x47 and was impressed with the lack of recoil.
so the question is whats the pros and cons of the 6.5 calibres ?

Re: 1000 yard rifle ?
Pros
Low recoil
High b.c. bullets
Inherent accuracy
Lower powder charges
Reasonable barrel life
Cons
Although good, other calibres with better b.c.s make this less competitive at the highest levels.

6.5x47 is probably the way to go.
Re: 1000 yard rifle ?
If you want to be very competitive the 7 may be the way to go. If you just enjoy the shooting then 6.5x47 is a very pleasant way to go.

6,5x47 is undoubtedly and accurate rifle at 1000 yards however it lacks the bullet weight of the 7mm/.284 which means it more susceptible to wind and you need some really good wind reading skills to get it to work for you on a windy day.
Example, I put four out of 5 shots into an F Class V which is 5" in diameter from the 1200 yard point one still afternoon (Fifth was low right) with a 6,5x47. One month later same rifle, same ammunition and a lot more wind and I was hammered by an F Open shooter running a straight .284. The difference was I was shooting pointed 123 Scenars and he was shooting 180 grain Bergers.

or be a real man and do it with .223Maggot wrote:get a .308 and learn to shoot.....

Haha, I've just got a slot for .308 for this reason.
Cheap/readily available components, more extensive data and it's a good match at 1000 yards :)

+1 also stick with 1 bullet weight and learn its quirks I hear so often oh I use this bullet to this range then that bullet to another etc. etc (they also normally refer to them as heads as wellMaggot wrote:get a .308 and learn to shoot.....

I have used 155gr SMK for about 8 years I know what it is and isn't capable of I'm happy with it, it does what I want and easily to 1000 when needed.
