OK which AK Part 4 (honestly the last one)

#1 Post by Zilberbak »

Managed at last to get to Severnside last weekend and put some rounds through the Bulgarian and was pleasantly surprised with the 7.62 x 39 round being no where near as fierce through a relatively short barrel as I was expecting. Have fitted a set of Mid West Industries hand guards that allowed me to use a Fab Defense T-Pod as a bipod that worked well in getting in the black at 100yds with the iron sights. The UTG side mounted rail/Mepro 21 was less successful as having cutting a notch in the mount to allow it to slide on to the side mounting rail from left to right the lock down is insufficient to stop the recoil inertia making it slide forward (now thinking of tapping the end of the UTG mount and bolting a small removable plate after fitting it to stop it sliding). The Mepro 21's bulls eye recticle is too big for anything past 50yds so have fitted a spare Strikefire instead. I couldn't help myself and ordered the Fab Defense window magazine from Zahal (Israeli based AK, VZ58, etc. bits supplier), which worked really well and seems well made. The final addition was a section of 5/8" dia. by 1/2 wall pipe insulation to the left hand bar of the folding stock that gave a dead on cheek weld for the irons and half-cheek/chin weld for the red dot. Taped on with insulation tape it was probably the best and definitely the cheapest addition. Apologies to the traditionalists but highly recommend the Mid West hand guard set (£130 quid from Brownells UK and arrived just after a week).

Despite my preference for traditional AKs I do like the look of that, a bit like an AK-104 and an AKS-47 got it on goodjob

Have you considered the UTG picatinny receiver cover mount?

Like the look of the Fab Defense kit and very reminiscent of my Vz 58. Have got good news and bad news on the side rail front as l ordered a Mid West side rail, which duly turned up from our friends Brownells in less than a week. Whilst it was on its way my brain was going ten to the dozen thinking of ways to stop the recoil inertia crawl and decided to drill and tap the rail and fix with a Allen screw. When the rail turned up it went straight on with no problem as it uses an ADM lock to fasten to the side mounting rail on the receiver. That's the good news. The bad news was that the picatinny rail trough is slightly out of line with the back iron leaf, the Mid West hand rail and front post. Makes no difference to the optic as the windage adjustment balances it out. Sighted the Strikefire in today at Severnside and happy with the results especially as l can remove the side rail on and off to suit.
