What next....

#1 Post by Livefast »

Now that i've had a chance to get up close and personal with my Mosin it seems that the bug for WW2 rifles hasn't responded to medication and I seem to have an urge to seek out another for the collection aaarggh .

What should be the next on the list??

How about a hex receiver Mosin or a M38 or M44 carbine......on the lookout myself for a hex receiver variant to go with my round receiver '39 91/30.

Or you could go for a Lee Enfield No.4 or a Mauser K98

A P14. I sold mine I deeply regret it I'm going to have another one this year. I also NEED a Mosin Nagant sniper. That would leave me with one slot left to fill. One only one how depressing. So few slots so many calibers to tempt you. wallhead

As snayperskaya has pointed out you can't go wrong with a Lee Enfield or a Mauser. You con get nice Swedish mauser's too for a good price and the 6.5x55 is a nice round. Schmidt Rubin's are quite nice too and you can handload with standard .30 bullets too however they can be a bit finicky with neck sizing from what I've heard.

Do you have an SMLE yet? I think everyone should own a No1 Mk3* at some point in their lives, I also agree with the choice of P14. There are also some 'bargain' Mausers such as the M1930 which can still be had for sensible money. I have a scrubbed version built by Fabrique Nationale which was not hugely expensive when I got it.

Oh god there are loads of choices, I hope you have deep pockets, I'm afraid I have caught the bug so much that my cards are maxed out and bank account empty. I like the history associated with rifles and everyone I get I have to have a bayonet to go with it, and sling etc if it doesn't already have one.

I know what you mean!......when I got the Dragunov I got a Soviet era mag pouch, then I had to get two more mags as it held four.....and it has two small sections for a cleaning kit and cleaning rods so they had to be sourced and it also holds a PSO-1 scope when not fitted on the rifle so I had to get one.It turns out there was a seperate little pouch that holds an oil bottle, winter battery compartment for the PSO-1 along with spare bulbs, batteries and a tinted eyepiece so all those had to be sourced and so on!!!!!......I now have pretty much a complete Soviet Afghan era VDV snipers kit including a KZM snipers oversuit and a pair of blue and white 80s vintage Mockba sneakers!!!

I've still got my eye on a No4 as it's what I originally set out to get before I was ambushed by my M44. Have a nice one that is owned by a colleague that I need to prize out of his hands.......plus I think if you are collecting WW2 you should really have the home nation rifle first.......and I just happen to have a slot for .303.

I would love a Nazi marked K98 but the prices seem to be rather steep and like the look of the K31.........god, I need to win the lottery!

That's exactly what I found. When I was looking they were going for £700 or so and weren't matching serial numbers or in that good condition. I came across a Yugoslavian M48 mauser made by Zastava during the early 50s. The rifle had never been shot (save for proof) and the bore was as shiny as a mirror. All serials matching except for the floor plate and it only cast me £300 including 10 stripper clips. I've shot two kar98 rifle's previously and they feel identical to my Yugo M48. There are some slight visual differences but functions the same otherwise.
