Recommend me a scope....

#1 Post by Daryll »

Ok, following on from my other post about the Mossberg MVP LC .308 I've decided to splash out on one.

I'm still trying to decide what scope to put on it though.

It will mainly be used for fairly short range but hopefully once or twice a year get down to Bisley to stretch its legs a little

Mossberg offer the Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44 as a combo, but thats out of my price range.

I'm looking for something around 4-16 or 5-20 magnification, x44 or 50, preferably 30mm tube and Mil/Mil. My budget is around £300

At the moment I'm tempted by the Falcon 4-18x44 FFP @£270.

Anyone recommend (or not) these scopes or suggest an alternative..?

TIA

Daryll.

Over your choices, I'd go for a second hand, better quality scope. There's plenty of good examples out there. There's some in the fire sale section of this forum...
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I have been keeping an eye on the sales section, but nothing in there that fits the bill, that hasn't been sold....

£270 for a Chinese scope? And why would you want FFP?

If you want a Chinese scope at Chinese scope prices, try Fox Firearms - their 8-32 at £125 is great value.

Well thanks Gents for the positive comments.. or not...

My reasoning for the Falcon:
Yes its Chinese made, but QC checked in the UK by a British company. Its the mag/zoom and size I want, 30mm tube, FFP, true Mil/Mil, target turrets, recoil proof up to .338LM... and a 10 year warranty...(which I agree is fine as long as the Company lasts 10 years..!!)
It also gets some good reviews, even in the US who can be very brand snobbish...

So what other scopes can you suggest with those specs for that price..?

The Fox scopes that GP and Triffid suggested, aren't they the OEM ones that are made by Zos, and marketed as Fox, Richter, JSR,Tasco, etc...?

I have a Richter 8-32 on one of my rimfires and its great, but i wouldn't put it on a .308.

If I could justify it, or was a Benchrest or F Class shooter, (which I'm not), yes I'd go for a 2nd hand S&B or Swaro at triple (or more) the cost.

I'll keep looking.....

You can confidently put a Fox (ZOS) on your 308 - I know lots of shooters who have. Honestly, the optics are amazing - it's a bargain for £125.

I have 3x Fox scopes on my rifles.
one on my AIAE 308
one on my Remmy 6.5x47
one on my Howa 223

all have been faultless for 4-5 yrs. I cant fault them for value for money.

I have just bought a 4th one to go on my Rimmie.
