Ruger Scout .223

#1 Post by rufrdr »

Happy New Year to one and all!

I recently purchased a mildly customized Ruger Scout .223 rifle from a another shooter who fired a box of cartridges through it and then put it away. It is still inbound to the range where it will be received for me but I thought I'd share some photos of it.

I've seen the .308 version at the range but frankly recoil out of a light weight rifle like the scout is becoming a problem for me. For my old shoulder a .223 out of a 7.5 lb rifle is just what I need.

Any experience with these on your side of the pond?

The handguard is from an M1 rifle. I think it looks pretty slick. The factory magazines are outrageously expensive but fortunately there are polymer magazines for half the price. It will be a range and desert toy only.

You going to mount it scout style? Like it's made to be? Funny thing, all but one Scout I've seen have not had the flash hider, they've just had a Ruger Ranch style Crown.

No, just the iron sights. I prefer them for range fun. If I was meat hunting it would have a scope.

Official UK imported ones don't have the flash-hider as standard due to UK law

So how come straight-pull Dragunovs and SLRs have flash hiders?.

Nice looking rifle by the way :good:

Like the other guy said, how come Dragunovs come with Flash hiders, as do straight pull LMT's and the like? You mean US import laws? How come Suffolk rifle had a flash hider one then?

Also flash hider's aren't banned, there is some confusion about whether they are controlled or not, but rifles from all over had them on. I know there has been a period where they US state department get's funny about them, but that doesn't seem to be happening now.

Flash hiders are classed as a section 1 component part...unlike muzzle brakes which are not controlled.

It may also be that they're ITAR restricted.

As with lots of things here, common sense doesn't apply!

I didn't know that, if that's the case though that still doesn't explain why when I'm on North west custom parts or anyone else that has a straight pull AR that I see flash hider's on firearms that have been imported and not made here ala Mark Bradley or SGC. If its a section one component on a full section 1 rifle it's a moot point, you have a full section one rifle right there, might as well let the whole thing in.

From what I can make out, correct me if I'm wrong, you can buy a rifle with a non-removable factory fitted flash hider (the front sight/flash hider combo on a Dragunov is press-fitted and pinned as standard) but a component part flash hider on its own cannot be purchased, for example the flash hiders listed on the Rusmilitary website are all marked as "not for UK sale".

So where does that leave all the AR's that are straight pull/lever release/whatever clearing fitted with hiders that can be removed with tools? I know some are uk made, but they still have hiders (even though some have gone to brakes for practical purposes like controlling muzzle climb for follow up shots during practical shooting). But some have definitely (like an LMT 223 on gunstar right now) have hiders on them. What gives?
