Re-barrelling a R700 in Hants

#1 Post by ptheta »

I have an R700 in .223 with a 1:12 twist. I'm thinking of getting the barrel replaced in the new year to a 1:9 or 1:8. I primarily want to shoot 62gr mil surp at 100,200, and 600yds but I might do a little hand loading some time in the far future with some slightly heavier bullets. I'd also like to retain the ability to shoot 55gr so maybe that means I should go with 1:9 rather than 1:8?

Any suggestions on where I should go and how much I should expect to pay in the North Hants area would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul.

Hi Paul,

I shoot a CZ 527 in .223 which has a 1:9 twist barrel. My rifle can accurately shoot 52gr and 69gr SMK bullets (handloads) with no problem at all. I have also shot 62gr military ball and tracer (milsurp & homeload) with again, no problem at all. When I say accurate, I'm talking around a half inch at 100m. it is a varmint barrel to for what it's worth.

I cannot answer how well the 1:8 twist will shoot so perhaps someone else can chime in.

Thanks. I'll make a note of that address.

Would still be interested to know if anyone has experience of 55gr in a 1:8.

Paul.
