I used to specify nylon for the air operated brake system on trucks. Any areas which were not clipped properly could result in the pipes rubbing against the steel chassis frame parts. After some testing to see if the pipes could wear through, we found that the part that suffered wear was the steel.

Back when my dad was working as a research engineer he conducted a study on the wear on printing machines - seems plain paper can be pretty abrasive to steel if you pass enough over it...

I have five of the Chinese versions, 308 to 223, all of which came in an identical packet to the Hoppes, and none of which cost more than a fiver, posted from HK.
No matter what anyone says, they will clean a barrel better than a phosphor brush/dry patch. You just have to be a bit careful when pulling the starter cord through.
It's quite easy to keep it in the middle of the crown if you lay the rifle on a table and pull towards you with fingers guiding it.
I keep the tail end of mine moistened with 3in1 high performance lube, and just pull through once after every 50 rounds.
I wipe out the chamber with brake cleaning solvent prior to shooting.
Deep clean with solvents every 100-150 rounds.
Chuck the snakes in the wash when they get dirty.

I ordered a few from China and after very close examination, I'd have to say that I can't see any difference from the 'real' thing. I also subjected a Hoppes snake and the Chinese version to a pull test at work in the lab and the Hoppes snake gave up the ghost first so make from that what you will.
I use them primarily with a bit of Windex on my Mosin after shooting Russian surplus before I leave the range then follow up with a proper clean once I get home. For this purpose they are absolutely fine. I've no intention of paying £20 or thereabouts for the same product just because it has Hoppes printed on the packaging (and left the factory through the front door).
Easy to use and keep in the centre of the crown when pulling through and at £3 a pop delivered .... what's not to like?

Cheapo bore snake arrived. Cord part is only around 26 inches (compared to around 40+ inches on the Hoppes I have) so no good for a 30" tube! Knitted part is around 3 inches shorter than the Hoppes - not a problem. All stitching and materials seem identical. Stood on one end and pulled the other as hard as possible with no ill effects. Don't have a rifle to clean at the moment but I'm happy with the value of this item for a quick run through at the range before a proper clean back home. Seven for the price of one is a no-brainer for me.

It took a while to arrive, but it seems to do the job and would not at all be surprised if the same factory is selling them out the back door...

We have quite a few bore snakes. Two are original Hoppes, the remainder are low cost Chinese 'copies' bought from Ali Baba. They are indistinguishable, right down to the packaging. :) The Chinese ones cost £3.99 including postage.

£3.59 I paid for a 20 ga one. I don't think I'll be buying another Hoppes one anytime soon...
