I see. So is that more important than allowing the bullet to align in the throat?
Or is the whole neck-size thing just for people who don't have the capability to accurately control the position of the shoulder?
Or is it just a marketing rouse by die makers?

Dear oh dear such handloading snobbery and intolerance.

FL sizing, neck sizing, partial full length sizing etc are tools that we handloaders have at our disposal and are all the richer for it.

You finally got something right when you said it is about centring the bullet in the bore, it your rifle has short or speccy freebore and unworn lands then using that to centre the bullet is the best way and full length resizing is the best way to do this as it allows the case to centre around the bullets position.

How ever if you are loading for a rifle with generous or worn free bore and lands then the bullet will not reach the bore to be centred so neck sizing is the best option along with other procedures and bullet choice for centring the bullet as well as possible in the bore.

Not all people shoot tight speccied target rifles and rimless cartridges and therefore there proceedures may be different, fortunately shooting a very broad church and offers us many different challenges and rewards.

I know on principle that you won't believe me but I have neck sized for the majority of my older rifles because the bullet in them will not seat far out enough to reach the lands, over the past forty years I have shot tens of thousands of handloaded rounds in these rifles and have proved to my satisfaction, which is all the proving I need to do, that when the bullet cannot be seated into the rifling then neck sizing gives better groups than full length resizing especially when using cast bullets but also with condom bullets.

There is little engraved on holy tablets in this game as each rifle/ammunition components relationship is different and a successful handloader needs to have an open mind to all the options to enable him to get the results he is after.

Why on earth wouldn't I believe you? I've done plenty of neck sizing myself, and know plenty of others who do so with good results. And I don't see where you find snobbery or intolerance; I'm trying to learn why people think NS is better for them, and I'm certainly pleased to see a more considered answer than 'a tighter case fit is good', or 'I shot a few groups and the NS ones were better'.

I once believed someone who told me that my brass would last longer if I neck sized, and that the bullet would be centred by leaving part of the neck unsized, and that leaving the body unsized was a good thing for consistency and alignment; such ideas are commonplace, and while they may be valid in the case of generous/worn throats/leades they are just as often followed in tight/unworn situations like mine (and I'm pretty sure that quite a few of the NS advocates here are not shooting old/worn/loose chambers); In the case of bottleneck target chamberings (usually with *very* little throat clearance) I can't see how any of these arguments can hold true, but I'm always keen to learn, open to ideas and would love to hear any arguments why NS could be better in this situation (provided they can be offered without accusations of 'snobbery and intolerance' and 'finally' getting something right).

Every day is a school day! I'm only on my second calibre and have only made 800 rounds total.

Always learning here.
