Metal Polish? Lands.

#1 Post by cumbriadavid »

Hi all, I am new to reloading, and using a Hornady Case Tumbler with corn cob media to clean 22-250 cases.

I have seen that there is a kind of liquid metal polish which can be tipped in with the media. Does this work, and is it worth me buying some? The cases I have done so far are clean but very matte in finish.

Also, I have read that the overall length of the finished ammo can be set at about 0.020" before the barrel lands. Does this sound about right?

Cheers for now folks

Avoid metal polishes which contain ammonia (such as Brasso, original T-Cut), since this can damage the brass.

I use liquid "Auto Glym Metal Polish", mixed 1:1 with white spirit.

You can see the results I get (with Walnut media) here:

If your media is cleaning effectively I suspect it is already treated in some way. I buy plain untreated media and it's quite ineffective until I've added polish. I recall that one of the media types (corn-cob or walnut) is better at cleaning while the other is better for polishing, but I can't remember which way round it is. My walnut cleans and polishes well, but some folks make a mix of corn-cob and walnut.

jewellers rouge bought off ebay , it's cheap and I put a level teaspoon in with a full tub of media , let it run for an hour then drop the cases in - result - perfect.

+1 for Auto Glym. I clean in walnut first to remove any crud, then finish with corn and polish to get the shine. :)
