Re: Pistols or Hunting ?
I don't see why handguns would be treated any differently than any other firearm.
No need to say I agree with your statement. What I was merely asking from you my little English chums, was your view on the most image/popularity damaging fight for the current Gvnt : pistol or hunting ?
IMO hunting has a far nastier image than pistol in the public eyes. Yet, despite very little political gains to be made, the Gvnt is taking the higher risk & pushing forward the hunting's agenda. Probably for the reasons Dromia laid down so diplomatically.
The same way that Cameron's bill is an obvious creep-in via the back door by allowing hunting with more than two dogs, keeping our beloved pistols in a club safe does sound like a pandering to the anti lobby that I see merely as a small temporary price to pay to jump the first hurdle & not to have the hysterical "en masse" public opposing it. Couple of gold medals later won by a nice hijab wearing black lesbian after a "no incidents" period and the argument of the storage can be discussed again.

I understand your thinking, and if it was allowed as you say it could be a first step. My thinking is probably influenced by the fact that I can own a handgun and keep it at home, if I couldn't maybe I would think differently.I see merely as a small temporary price to pay to jump the first hurdle & not to have the hysterical "en masse" public opposing it
Re: Pistols or Hunting ?
I'm guessing your username comes from the Para you own then? That a double stack 45 or 9mm? They cost alot for a 1911 from what I've seen.ordnance wrote:I understand your thinking, and if it was allowed as you say it could be a first step. Re: Pistols or Hunting ?
Its .45 I like the 1911 as a classic historical handgun so for me its not an 1911 unless its in the original .45. I bought it a few years ago for £ 750 second hand. I will change it if I can get my hands on a Colt Gold Cup 1911, but they don't come up for sale to often and a good one will be well over £ 1000.That a double stack 45 or 9mm? Get a Gold Cup quick, you don't know if that Native tribe that wan'ts a controlling stake will be interested in keeping them going. Plus wouldn't a Kimber be just as good? I'm sure they have a gold cup type model. I'm come to conclusion we're too much into the brands in shooting, sometimes good, sometimes bad. My dad bought some medical vials for his nitro muzzle loader, 100 for £20. The branded Pedesoli ones would be 20 for £25.ordnance wrote:Its .45 I like the 1911 as a classic historical handgun so for me its not an 1911 unless its in the original .45. You get one, but I'm just putting it out there I think sometimes its good to look at alternatives. I seem to recall a Norinco 1911 single stack being sold in a shop in Fermangh once for not too much and the Canadians and Aussies love them. Also this Para I saw on gundeal was about 1700-1800 for a 9mm version that holds 18 rounds.

If money was no problem I would be looking at a wilson combat, maybe some day.You get one, but I'm just putting it out there I think sometimes its good to look at alternatives.
Re: Pistols or Hunting ?
I was gonna mention them, funny thing also.... before Norinco's were banned from importation into the US Wilson used Norinco's as Donor guns. The receivers are milled out of Railway line steel, I once saw an Aussie do some work on forum on a single stack 9mm and the pistol he came up with was stunning.ordnance wrote:If money was no problem I would be looking at a wilson combat, maybe some day.You get one, but I'm just putting it out there I think sometimes its good to look at alternatives.

Well indeed what does constitute Historical interest? I know of at least one Glock 17 GEN1 held under 7.3 at a club. People have been very much pushing the boundaries of what 7.3 is, I have heard of a few custom pistols as well based upon the 1911 frame. It is pretty much the only way now that you can regularly shoot centre fire pistols in the UK outside of holding one for humane dispatch or moving to Northern Ireland.froggy wrote:Thanks Suomi-Ratty ,
What constitutes the historical interest ? Does that mean one can own & shoot a pre-WW1 dated 1911 or a C96 ? What are the restricted circumstances ? when a target suddenly appears ?
It is very much British shootings naughty little secret and I am surprised that the antis have not got wind of it, in theory it is aimed at saving rare and important guns that are important to the nations history not unlike how a museum works but with the right to test and research them. I have a friend who has 7.3 pistols and I always jokingly ask him f he has done much research lately to which he replies "researched the hell out of my 1911 or C96" the other day.
It only further shows the utter knee jerk nonsense the 97/98 bans were! Considering that in the mainland UK you can hold pistols for humane dispatch, 7.3 and black powder or move to Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man the oft talked about threat to the public the antis raise when the subject of legalising pistols again is brought up is clearly overblown.
In the end Pistol shooters were collectively punished for the mistakes made by an under resourced Police Force dealing with a known barrack room lawyer (Hamilton) despite clear warning by serving officers and those in the shooting community, just so that Police Force could have a quiet life...

What makes it even worse is Police Scotland the Service that replaced the under resourced Stirling Area of Central Scotland Police is further reducing resources to manage Firearms licensing whilst having to implement the absurd Air Gun license scheme!

All avoidable if the Police had done their job properly when it came to Firearms Licensing
