Russian special forces were spotted recently in the Russian republic of Dagestan, which has been experiencing an insurgency recently. The commandos were equipped with at least two foreign weapons, an HK417 7.62x51mm rifle with an impressively large suppressor, and an Accuracy International Arctic Warfare sniper rifle, caliber unknown, also suppressed. The video..

Russian special forces have been using Western speicalist weapons for some time now, espeically AI rifles. No doubt our resident Russofile will be wringing his hands with dismay.

Presumably such sales are now embargoed, but they clearly bought what they needed while they could.

If you have the money and contacts there is always someone prepared to sell, sanctions or no sanctions.

And no dismay here, Spetsnaz GRU units have used Western Firearms in some operations for years, even going back to the 60s and 70s, for example the Steyr SSG 69 is a popular rifle with Russian snipers.Spetsnaz GRU units are no different to other special forces around the world, they tend to have access to a wider range of both domestic and foreign weapons that regular army units would not.

I have a pic somewhere of a Spetsnaz trooper in Soviet-Era Afghanistan carrying an M16.

Quite a few pics of internal troops & FSB using AI rifles or fitting Eotech on their AK74, but I did not know they were using HK as well. By the same token, French SF, police & gendarmerie intervention groups are issued with VERP12.

I shot in a comp in Hungary against various military including a Spetnatz unit from Krasnadar.

The UK group hit it off with them and we drank together each night.

They were allowed to pick their own rifles and all went for the Sako TRG22.

As has been mentioned, NATO uses Russian kit - the VEPR12 has been approved for issue by 17 NATO countries.

And luckily Molot aren't affected by the sanctions as they were not properly incorporated into KC to be considered part of it.

It's always useful to be able to use the other chap's ammunition, and certain things cause less embarrassment if they have to be left behind...

Various US law enforcement departments also use the Saiga12 semi auto shotgun as well.

It's common knowledge about Russia and the AI......it's even on the AI page on Wikipedia!.

"The Accuracy International Arctic Warfare model has since spawned an entire family of sniper rifles using the Arctic Warfare name, and has been adopted by a number of other countries, including Australia, Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Latvia, Malaysia, Norway, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom"
