I never said the Tikka was a bad rifle, especially since they've managed to fix the problem of the stainless barrels blowing up..... But, look at this and look at the Ruger Scout..... Sako/Tikka have indeed to my mind, ripped it off.
And as for the mags, when Sako/Tikka shove out their "civilian" version of this, which will only come with one mag as the government aren't paying, and that poor punter is looking at £180 per extra mag.

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Re: Canadian Rangers finally get a new rifle.
It's a nice looking rifle, but so is the Ruger. I quite like the scout styling I do have a Ruger Scout. The nearest I have to a Tikka is an old Sako Finnfire, the Sako is a nicer finished rifle and I can only think the Tikkas will be comparable.
I think I'd prefer the price of extra Ruger mags compared to the Tikka ones though.

Exactly my point- likely to be an awful lot of NRE in there.Fedaykin wrote:Well that does put a different complexion on the situation, $1.5 million for 125 trials rifles no doubt built to the required spec for the contest is not unreasonable. That figure would include other stuff as part of the trials process like on site support and detailed documentation. Also the bid will have to meet all sorts of compliancy regulations, that is the main reason why small companies rarely bid on such contracts.Meaty wrote:All I read was "The Canadian Gov. has spent $1.5 million on 125 test rifles thus far. That equates to $12000 a rifle."zanes wrote: Is this an accurate figure or the all-too-often-misused "total contract price/number of rifles"?
Make of that what you will.
Once they start pumping out of the Colt factory in Canada expect that cost to come right down.
Re: Canadian Rangers finally get a new rifle.
You think so well what about the M55 and M65 trapper models that predate the Ruger by a long way, as did the Parker Hale Scout.Sim G wrote:I never said the Tikka was a bad rifle, especially since they've managed to fix the problem of the stainless barrels blowing up..... Personally I like the look of the new rifle, I do wonder if we will see some clones appearing hopefully not at vastly inflated figures in the not too distant future.
GBP2200 for a UK version maybe or will it be a bit more.

WTF?
How far do you want to go back to "prove" that Tikka/Sako pre-date a Ruger Scout rifle? What are you actually looking to illustrate? Reference to a "Trapper" model or the P-H Scout is again..... Why? In fact, none of those mentioned fall into the Cooper Scout concept anyway. But that was not my point.
My point was simply, look at the Ruger Scout rifle then compare that model directly to the "new" Tikka Ranger rifle.... Do you see it? Sako/Tikka ripped it off.

I'm a little envious of that!

Sim,
This is not a statement, more a question . I was under the impression that the "scout rifle" concept was a short & light bolt action rifle chambered in a punchy calibre, magazine feed, with a forward mounted long eye relief low mag scope such as the Ruger that I think you are referring to. However since this Tikka has provision only for a "classic" position for a short eye relief scope, does it still really qualify as a "Scout rifle" and therefore a Rugger clone ?

No I don't see it at all.Sim G wrote:Chapuis wrote: You think so well what about the M55 and M65 trapper models that predate the Ruger by a long way, as did the Parker Hale Scout.

Saying that Cooper didn't invent the scout principle either he merely developed an idea based on the number 5 rifle that he had seen and admired. Just a pity he had this hang up about a long eye relief scope as it never really caught on. So you could even suggest that the number 5 was a scout rifle.

No, I don't think so Sim G.Sim G wrote:Chapuis wrote: You think so well what about the M55 and M65 trapper models that predate the Ruger by a long way, as did the Parker Hale Scout.

At no point do I think anybody from Tikka/Sako gather together in a boardroom slapped a picture of the Ruger Scout on the wall and said "Let's copy that".
No, just no. The Canadian's put forth a RFP that had some very specific requirements when it came to features. Tikka/Siko first of all decided they had a rifle that could be adapted to the specification, the T3. They had a model, the Stainless wood laminate that was a good starting point. They then took that model and added all the features that the Canadians wanted.
Now that the resulting rifle looks very similar to a Ruger Scout is more a case of parallel evolution then any nefarious plan to rob Ruger.
