The Phoenix F Class and other competitions

Anyone going to Phoenix on the Saturday who by any chance has some heavy/casting/foundry sand they want to get rid of/sell?

Enough for a couple of shooting rear bags.

We have been told that the place to go to is a metal foundry and we are clueless as to where to find one....

According to Google there are a few Foundrys in Bedfordshire. There is one in Dundee and I never though to try one! Failing that there is a supplier of "proper" bag sand in Fife but you have to buy a bag so probably would need a few bags to fill! I can get details if you need em.

I filled my bags with kiln dried block paving sand from wickes, very fine , bag came out pretty good to my mind.

How heavy did it turn out, is it much heavier than normal sand?

Thanks, it has got oil in it so not sure but I will ask the seller if he has anything suitable.

According to my scales it comes out at 3 kilos, be interesting to know how that compares to other rear bags, bag is a PROTEKTOR MODEL.

Good afternoon Christel,

I filled my bags with kiln dried block paving sand from wickes, very fine , bag came out pretty good to my mind.

I was in Wicks tonight picking up pea shingle and spotted a large bag of very fine kiln dried block paving sand that had been damaged and re-bagged. So off to the till where the lass told me it was GBP1.50 for the bag, so I had it!

Some experimenting by volume using a 54R Lee dipper filled level to the top

Builders sand 58 grains
Block paving sand 75.5 grains
Chromite sand 101 grains

I did not have any Zircon sand to complete the experiment.

I am picking up a SEB Bigfoot bag from Brian Fox very shortly and might continue this experiment :)

I asked Brian Fox if he does heavy sand and he said no.
He did however do all the other bits and bobs we needed so good stuff.
He will be at Phoenix so we agreed that we would pick it up then.
