.44 Magnum Load Data

#1 Post by HALODIN »

Hello,

I can't find any load data for my .44 magnum with Prvi 429 240gr FMJ's and HODGDON HP-38. Any idea what qualifies as a safe min and max powder load? I thought I might be able to use QuickLOAD to give me an idea, but it doesn't list the Prvi 429 240gr FMJ's. There's nothing in my Speers or Hornady bibles either...

Any thoughts?

Some of those speeds on the Viht site look really good, but I don't have any of those powders to hand. The image above is from the hodgdon website and well... it's not that helpful with the bullets at hand.

Yes that's the 1st value in the image in my first post, but I suppose what I'm confused about is different bullets of the same weight seem to command different min and max powder levels and I've never understood why. My brain says the type/style of bullet is inconsequential, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Would you regard all FMJ's of the same weight the same?

The data I have at hand quotes.

My Hodgdon manual says 240 grain jacketed soft point HP38 start 5.4grains------maximum 7.4grains.

Lee manual quotes 240 grain jacketed bullet HP38 start 8.0 grains-------max11.0 grains that's the same load as on the web site so I guess its for a full metal jacket.
