WANTED LOAD DATA FOR AMAX 175 BULLET FOR 308

#1 Post by ANDY T »

Hi
Looking for some load data for my 308 i will be using a Amax 178 bullet as i have around 7-8 hundred of these 178 Amax bullets so will be using them for sometime to come.
and the powder i will using is N140. I will be shooting from 600-1000 meters.

So could you give me some data on how much N140 powder to use and what fps i should be looking for.
Rifle used will be a Unique Alpine TPG 1 with a 1/10 twist

Thanks

The first piece of "equipment" you need to reload... a data handbook!

To begin with I suggest you purchase a copy of the Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading and read the Vihtavouri reloading data (or similar reference material).

Using these resources will enable you to solve the question for yourself.

A comprehensive reference is essential for every reloader, novice and expert alike.

Start at around 41 grains of N140 and ladder load it to 42gr in .2 or .3 gr steps, after that I would suggest .1gr steps again ladder load so development will be quick. Around 43 grains onwards is a compressed load depending on your COAL

Have you calculated the COAL and what is the barrel length?

Yes COAL is 2840 and barrel is 26''

43 grains and 2.840" it should get you to maybe 2600 with a 26" barrel, I would not go hotter with your rifle and you are into compressed loads. With the Amax I would say look at SP9, it will get you over 2700 which will work at 1000 yards.

I am not a huge fan of the 178 and think you can do better, see if you can swap them out for some 155 Scenar's or 155.5 Berger's

They list the 170 Lockbase, the basis of the Lapua 170HPS (High Performance Sniper) except they use Bofors powder, stuff a reasonable load of N550 behind it and you have an incredibly accurate 1200 yard .308 round, my all time favourite. Pity they can be a PITA to get hold of.
