As much as I love the look of some knives, I really can't understand why some of them cost so much.

I have a few that are easily 40+ years old, and initially cost very little, but they are still going strong and manage to keep a good edge, so what makes a £500 knife worth £500?

I know Kabar, Cold Steel etc are pricey..suppose you get what you pay for. In sayingthat I have a Benchmade folder/ locker that is a solid bit of kit. You could shave with when it was new..blade's now a bit ragged but I can't find anyone here to do it. It may leave it till I'm back in the USA.

The comments at the bottom of the review certainly make it clear that Mr Pelton is not a liked man, I wonder what he has done to achieve such a reputation.

No, no confusion Chuck. I have seen countless numbers of knives that just make me think "What!!!" when I see the price.

There are some kitchen knives here, for example. Yes, they look great, but they are just knives. There is no end of examples - I really can't be arsed trawling through the internet to find them, but they are definitely out there and not too difficult to find.

Oh well I shall now have to inspect my knife collection, it is about time I sold some of the rarer items, they are just sitting in a drawer gathering dust, (not really, archive wrapped and protected atmosphere.

Robert Young Pelton even though he is not primarily a knife designer, he is supposedly an "adventurer" and has the reputation of embellishing the truth for his own commercial gains.... A fantasist if you like.

But, Lionsteel knives are very, very good.

I'm a big fan of the Rick Hinderer designed knives for Zero Tolerance, custom knives for the price of a mass produced one. The 0566 & 0562 CF are built like tanks & look very cool.

Les, I know some specialist chef knives are a fortune, same with Sushi knives, so fine they have to be wiped after every cut to stop them rusting apparently.

Forkitchen use I like a decent blade - nowt worse than those cheap "own brand" items that can't cut anything without a fight.

Problem is so much is Chinese made and they are just crud. They don't hold an edge any length of time. In days gone by you could rely on names like Judge and Prestige for everyday use, not any more. I have a Kitchen Devil carver from 1978 that's way ahead in quality and edge compared to the one I bought last year.

I'd like a set of Cold Steel for the kitchen though - the missus wants a couple of their swords! .

Has anyone used these ceramic blade knives that are around these days?
