Key cutting for gunsafe
Hi, all.
This might be a daft question, but do you know; can your run of the mill, high street key cutters copy the key for my gun safe?
I ask as I assume it'll be an issue, considering the one in town can't copy my brother's front door key as it's too complicated apparently, what'll happen if I take them a Knights Templar/Illuminati style puzzle key for the gun safe?
Has anyone had their own key copied?

Re: Key cutting for gunsafe
The cutting of it shouldn't be an issue for a competent locksmith, it's getting the right blank that might be more the issue

Re: Key cutting for gunsafe
Some security key blanks cannot be obtained or cut on the High Street - only by a locksmith. Tis there a Timpsons near you - pop down with your key and ask.?

Pretty sure that bratton sound will supply blanks on request
As above, the actual cutting is easy, it's the blanks.

I've never had an issue.
Even when the key is stamped 'no not copy' the locksmith hasn't batted an eyelid

When guns are outlawed, only Outlaws will have guns
Re: Key cutting for gunsafe
Bratton Sound are most helpful and do supply blanks. The high street blanks for ammunition cases and smaller gun cases look exactly the same and I have had some cut, but they don't work. The Bratton Sound keys have a slightly smaller shaft so High Street keys will not insert properly. The tip of the key has to go though a hole at the back of the lock plate and this is slightly too small for anything but the proper blanks from BS. Been there spent the money and wasted it with half a dozen keys that don't fit (We use one of my old pistol safes in the office as a lock up and needed keys for several people) BS supplied the blanks and I had them cut by our local shop and they worked perfectly. Just hope the OP has a BS case.zanes wrote:Pretty sure that bratton sound will supply blanks on request

Most keys can be cut by a good locksmith they may have to order in blanks. But as long as they know make of lock and series they should be able to get them.
Some older safe keys are harder as they are obscure and you may need a safe and vault company for them. The other problem is patented keys with a profile issued to a manufacture these blanks are controlled and usually have to come from the safe maker you have to have the end user card that allows you to obtain copies.
