Probably doesnt answer the original question but... His answer was:

dated back to the first world war when we went on
the ranges you could sign out what you liked when
on operations you used mainly weapons of choice
remember it was about ammunition as well it would
be better for everyone to keep to the same caliber so if you ran out of ammo in a fire fight you could
share ammo

Btw, he served 22 yrs in the anglian reg and 1977-80 in the 22 reg. With seven tours of NI.

Hmmmm... Only i can see it... Must be some sort of SF trick...
