Another cast boolit seating question
Is it OK to seat a cast boolit (.303 in this case) to the point where the gas-check is just inside the case (i.e. past the neck and just slightly into the shoulder area), or will the heat melt the lead in front of it and/or pop it off as it shoots forward back through the neck...?

Re: Another cast boolit seating question
It should be just fine, if it wasn't then no one would be shooting plain based boolits.
The gas check will need to be seated through a sizing die though.
The only issue with increased seating depth is the same as for jacketed, reduced case capacity and the implications of that.

Re: Another cast boolit seating question
Thanks for the advice as always Adam
I think one of the problems I had last year was that the load was too fast (velocity wise that is), so was planning to drop the powder load anyway; but will allow also for the reduced case volume (though only going about 50 thou deeper anyway)...
...I've also picked up a 8mm seating die, so the boolits will be seating straighter.
Right, off to do some sizing and spudding

Re: Another cast boolit seating question
On a vaguely related subject I shoot cast, gas checked bullets in my 308 and the bottom of the bullet is well past the case shoulder. I use 16g of Alliant 2400 behind a 190 grain bullet. This goes at about 1550 fps and is the dogs danglies at 200 and 300 yards. No leading in barrel.

Mattern and Harris, how we could do with knowledge like they had/have available to our "national" bodies.

Re: Another cast boolit seating question
That's totally 'related' - It's good to know that others don't have a problem with the GCs in the case...and also interesting that you're getting good accuracy at 200/300 with a velocity less than 1600 fps...makes me more confident that I should be working down rather than up from my current (and not brilliant) load...thanks for your commentbewildered wrote:On a vaguely related subject I shoot cast, gas checked bullets in my 308 and the bottom of the bullet is well past the case shoulder.
