New Barnard Bolt handle

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

All this talk of bolt handles reminded me I have never been happy with the standard handle on my Barnard so today it was time to change it. The stock is Ice wood and the butt is made out Ebony so the obvious choice was Ebony however I made a second one out of Snake wood as I had a couple of scraps in the odds and sods box. Once turned they were thrown to the masses for deliberation (The Viking) She chose the Ebony which I agreed with so a quick seal and oil and it was ready to fit by chopping the ball on the end of the handle off and epoxying the new one in place.

Yes, I have too much time on my hands :D

I also dropped the trigger weight down a bit more a well which although light does feel nice. I have kept the trigger as a two stage.

This picture sadly does not do it justice, it actually has some very subtle graining that matches the butt nicely....

It looks OK right now and Ebony is quite hard wearing but if it does fail to stand up to the test of time I will make one out of aluminium or stainless steel, they are easily fixed in place and removed.

Ebony glued should stand well
Bare aluminium is ugly, even uglier in bright colours anodised. Onlly acceptable in hard anodised black or darkgrey
Stainless steel will make it so heavy that the bolt will close automatcally by gravity... LOL...
I hae seen many tastes for this. A favour in some circles is a golf ball. This gives an excellrnt grip and is quite original...

I must admit I like the look and feel of the Ebony Robert and such small finishing touches to the rifle make it mine as well. :)
