I should be okay then as I don't own any "assault rifles". Just regular old bolt rifles and a couple of AR15's.

At the time, Dick Wolf was also one of the biggest promoters of what is known as the "modern sporting rifle". What he tried to do was protect his vested interest in the said weapon type by stating that certain features and certain people shouldn't be allowed to own MSP/AR....

It wasn't only the magazines credibility that was at risk, he risked the livelihoods of the other authors, the production team and anyone else involved in that or the other magazines in the same stable! And then there is the whole ethos behind his comments and what the publications stood for. He betrayed those principals.

We had the same in the UK. Mike Yardley did the same. He chose to pronounce judgement on what he thought we should be able to own and shoot.... He back tracked and to a certain degree, got away with it, which was a tragedy as far as I'm concerned. But, on the back of Yardleys statements, I no longer buy the magazines he's associated with.

No point in being hardline about it, just use some common sense.

Why does it have to be a 30 round magazine? Over here it's 5 round magazines only for hunting, I'm also at a loss as to why you should have to explain anything to anyone whilst carrying out a legal pursuit. If some walker is that nervous do you really believe having a bolt action will make them any less nervous?

If they're walking where you're shooting there's a good chance they're over-extending their "right to roam" and shouldn't be there in the first place

Damn right, I'd be more freaked out if a walker appeared on any of my shoots.

Military style rifles are club only in Northern Ireland, as A/Ks and A/Rs were and still are the favourite firearm of terrorists here, the fear would be someone walking over the fields with that type of firearm could be mistaken by the security forces for a terrorist, which could basically lead to them being shot. On the plus side we can own handguns.

I agree the public needs to be educated about modern sporting rifles and should recognise them as no different from a wooden gun but one at a time in a field in the countryside just isn't an image efficient way of doing it

The places I shoot have several footpaths going across them and I see walkers all the time as I'm travelling to and from the bunny zones.

Honestly, if I've got a 12g over my arm or a cz slung over my shoulder, most walkers would be happy to stop and have a chat, maybe even admire the gun.

If I had an AR I'd wager they'd think again about even approaching me. If they did feel safe enough to approach they'd probably presume I was army doing some training or something.

It's just a completely different kind of weapon in the public eye and I completely understand why.

Honestly, expressing some common sense on here can really bring out the frothing at the mouth pro gun lobby at times.

I AM pro gun, just not religiously pro gun at the expense of everything else and blind to the realities of public perception!
