Demonic,

Talking about the lead issue - You can't get much more compelling evidence than finding lead compounds in some plant species growing in lead contaminated ground...depending on the levels then consumption of those plants could make you ill over time.

Just to make it clear though (you may be misinterpreting my posts), I'm not in favor of an outright ban - For contamination to be an issue there has to be a 'pathway' (aquifer, run-off, plant uptake etc.) to a sensitive receptor (human or sensitive environment) - So each case would need to be looked at individually to see if the conditions are such that the lead will be converted into compounds in sufficient quantity to be a problem by the time it gets to the receptor...

...assessing the risk properly takes solid science and unbiased reporting, but like anything else where there are vested interests there will be bias...

You may laugh (and that is quite funny), but I did some survey work on the Purbecks and wore hi-viz regularly...despite being careful I did once have to whistle and wave to some shooters to make sure they'd seen me.....ironically, they probably assumed I was an 'environmentalist having a go at them' when I had no issues with what they doing at all...

Dougan, thanks for the advice, my grandfather was a policeman for 30 years and I have never nor will I ever I refer to our police force as pigs, so it simple didn't occur.

It's just one of the things I like to say to change the subject as parties.

Did you know pigs can't look up?
Hey, did you know ginger people don't bury their dead?
They're going to ban carrying a blanket in the boot of your car.

Etc. ;)
