Where do you get the batch samples of Lapua from?
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

You should be thankful your FAC is sent to you in a windowless envelope! Durham uses a windowed one with a window so big you can blatantly read FIREARMS CERTIFICATE through it as well as your addressGaz wrote:My first FAC came in an envelope with my correct house number on the outside and an error in the house number on the FAC itself. I still don't understand how they could enter one number and handwrite the correct one on the outside!
It's probably a cockup rather than a conspiracy.

Last lot our club got which I've been using to good effect were done at Bisley, but not matche to my rifle, as it happens, batched to my fathers as he is the club sec and we needed the Lapua regardless... I would much rather use ammo matched to mine for competition (and practice to that end)...Sim G wrote:Where do you get the batch samples of Lapua from?

The lesson here is this....when you get back your FAC after variation VERY CAREFULLY CHECK IT, people make mistakes and as County Firearm teams are being pared to the bone by cutbacks and people get really stretched, this will unfortunately probably happen more and more.
The "carefully check and sign your FAC without delay" bit in the covering letter, firmly puts the responsibility on the shooters shoulders, so mistakes must be reported ASAP.
Don't just check the Firearms listed are correct, carefully check the serial numbers are too, one un-noticed wrong letter or number in a S/N can mean a serous problem for you down the line..
With regard to increasing ammunition allocation, slowly slowly catchy monkey is the way, ask for reasonable increases once every couple of years, (although I agree that's just not possible with .22lr, because of the shear amount people get through), in many instances, the Police don't really see the calibre as such, they just see you suddenly want thousands of rounds more and it sets the alarm bells off and calls for further enquires with subsequent delays in getting your FAC back.
I know a few people who have had the same issue regarding .22lr, different forces, all not keen to radically increase the entitlement.
All you can do is put a detailed letter in with your variation explaining the ammo requirement and hope someone actually takes the time to digest and understand your "good reason".

Re: FAC come back without everything asked for...
Update: After lots of hoop jumping, I got my certificate back with everything requested.
Moderator was an error. The ammo was held back due to not having shown to have bought enough rounds in the last year on my certificate. after much palaver I got the records from my club of how much ammo and when it was bought from my club.
Needless to say I'm a happy bunny now I'm all sorted.
Just gotta wait for Paul at Lantac to get back from Shot Show and organise emptying my bank balance and filling up these slots...

"Hoop jumping" and "palaver"..... Or, just assembling the evidence that supports your "good reason"?

Remember....?
As you said, you've only had an FAC for four years. You haven't even gone through a renewal yet. It's been mentioned by someone else "softly, softly, catch a monkey". Variations and renewals can develop into a exercise of diplomacy and compromise, with a large part of cunning and one up-man-ship. Try not to get to precious about it...Sim G wrote:
I'm not sure you've satisified "good reason" as far as the FEO is concerned.

Re: FAC come back without everything asked for...
I was refused a third slot for a .22 when I'd had mine for two years, I wrote a clear letter stating the reasons I wanted four .22's a year later and got them all.
