I doubt you could easily get to 12" however you could go a fair bit shorter than the standard 20"

Given the price of the donor M44 you could work out with a handy length rifle for quite a reasonable cost, I am not sure I would want to shoot such a thing with Heavy Ball though...

That abbreviated mozzy carbine is obscene. And now I want one.

I've seen "Tanker" Mauser's (with 17.4" barrels) in the US gun rags chambered in .30-06, 0.308W and .243W.

Weight 7.4 lbs.

Tactical-Life magazine tested three popular .30-06 bullet weights... 150 grains, 168 grains and 180 grains which showed comparatively minor losses over longer barrels despite the shorter bore, and all retained decent energy levels for most uses in the calibre. While it was not designed for precision shooting, with a load it likes it could easily hold inside the 4-inch general standard for a hunting rifle at 100 yards. It's a rugged and compact truck gun.

Horrible, and even nastier than the normal length M44 I shot next to a month or two back.
Might have to give it a go then thankssign

The muzzle blast would probably look like someone firing a back to front RPG!!!.....my 1944 M44 is in far too nice condition to cut down but will keep my eye out for a cheap beater and give it a go :good:

Dishwashers, not just for Christmas stuff...

I tested the front sections first and they seemed OK so everything went in the dishwasher last night and this is the result. The vast majority of dirt, oil and general finish has been nicely stripped and the wood is not going to need a great deal of drying out either. All in all a good result, thank you for the suggestion Dromia.

goodjob

Thank you for believing me and trusting my word, there appears to be precious little of that on here these days.

Still, if you can't verify it on the internet then it must be lies.

Adam, the wood has turned out really well and the process raised some of the smaller dents at the same time so I am very pleased, it looks and feels dry to the touch however I will give it a couple more days or so before starting on the shaping and sanding process.

One thing it has exposed is some surface cracks in the rear upper wood however it might be OK and this is a notoriously weak part of the stock when it comes to re-finishing.

Do you mean the clip on part 'tween the receiver and the rear sight?
