I moved house recently and upgraded the security in the process.

I'm pleased with my Rock composite door so far. When shopping around I looked for a PAS 24 tested door which is an enhanced security level. Cylinder locks should be bump/ snap proof.

I opted for a wireless alarm system because I'm doing up the house and wanted some flexibility in adding or moving sensors. It does allow you to control the system via an app and get email/SMS alerts. Also one of the sensors has a built in camera covering the lounge and uploads images to the cloud service when triggered. French/patio doors are often targeted so a shock sensor on the glass might be an idea.

After 24 years of a standard alarm system, I too have gone for ADT. It is expensive, but it gives piece of mind when you are away.

The best security is a layered method

Start at your boundary: Do you have trees bushes that can obscure or provide cover to a person breaking in cutting phone lines etc. Your neighbours can be a good line of defence if they know you and would challenge a stranger in your garden.

Next building perimeter: Strong doors quality windows both with good locks. The glass is the week point so consider toughened with a film to hold it together if smashed. look to see if it is easy to get to the first floor windows, can your bins, water butt be used to assist a thief. Doors that slam lock so you cannot forget to lock them are good. As is protecting your keys or patented keys so yours cannot be copied.

Finally an alarm: Do you want it to call you, a central station like ADT or both. Will the dialler be via land line, GSM or both. GSM with land line back up is best. Fit a sounder inside as well as outside nothing like 100db to get a thief out of the house. You can get an alarm fitted and have it monitored by smaller companies big is not always best Chubb were not very good. I'd be very surprised if you would get a police response as they would expect some form of conformation of an intruder. If they did attend after a few unwanted alarms they would stop attending.

If I needed to do all this to my house I would move.

Is any of this necessary or just for your own peace of mind? Seems like extraordinary lengths to go to if you don't need to.

Any device left to deliberately cause injury is a no no

None of it is necessary , but in some areas or some occupations all and more is very necessary. Just ask any one who's company has problems with the ALF they are serious nut jobs.

yep
Once ALF lost the TV series he became bitter. He focused that bitterness on HLS, GSK and all their friends. ALF recruited on a wide front under the banner of liberation with an animal instinct for publicity.

A Fort Knox safe if the budget allows: NO one gets into those.! Excellent fire resistance, multiple bolt locking things on both sides of the door.... and drop bolts in case anyone tampers with it..Oodles of space.....approx 10,000 rounds ammo rifle, pistol and shotgun ammo in this one -all packed in 30 and 50 cal cans...loads of magazines...Oh, and a couple of guns.. ;)

More of a safe box than a cabinet..weighs a ton, almost lol lol
