You can carefully machine away the barrel right in front of the receiver to remove some of the tension and in theory the barrel will be easier to unscrew. I prefer not to as it destroys the barrel. Then again so does a big set of Stilsons. Older service rifle barrels can be quite stubborn to remove on occasion and this one was no exception

I have a spare .303 slot and intend getting a SMLE sometime in the new year as I have just forked out for a Garand.
