VZ58 MARS - First Range Day

#1 Post by Blackstuff »

I managed to take the MARS out for a test fire on Sunday, despite a sizeable hangover, and was intent on doing a proper range review with a variety of ammo for function and accuracy testing. Unfortunately the weather had other ideas…. sign01

The wind was strong even for Ponteland, I’d guess 20-25mph more or less constantly but with gusts doubling that, certainly strong enough to shove you if your feet weren’t well planted. Worse, it was coming into the range from between 5-3 o’clock. :bad: Regrettably that meant that zeroing was almost impossible and as such there was no base line for accuracy testing. I ended up leaving a 2” left windage bias on the ‘zero’ to compensate for the wind. Hopefully next time out will be calmer, or at least the wind will be coming from 12 or 3 o’clock.

I took the following ammo;
.223 55gr FMJ PPU
.223 55gr FMJ Barnaul (zinc coated rather than lacquered)
.223 55gr FMJ Hornady Training
A variety of 5.56mm (C J ’94, RORG ‘88, RG ‘86, L2A1, L2A2, FNM ’81)

The only positive to take away from the day was that it chewed its way through everything I put in it with only 1 malfunction out of 180 rounds; the case didn’t completely clear the action and I closed the bolt on it giving the impression of a ‘stove pipe’ type jam. This was the 2nd round fired and I’m putting it down to the newness of the gun, rather than a ‘real’ FTE.

Speaking of ejection be prepared to spend a LOT of time picking up cases if you’re wanting to reload them, (or that’s the range protocol), the gun ejects them up, and forward, varying from 3ft to 10ft in the air and a similar distance forward. emrolleyes This makes keeping the profile of the gun on the range low next to impossible. You should also expect to spend a LOT of time explaining the action type to the many people that come over to gawk – “what the hell is THAT?” ”where do you get them from?” etc etc. :lol:

If you don’t know the RCO is ‘cool’ with this type of thing, it might be an idea to let them know before you start shooting. Also don’t forget to ask for permission to go forward of the firing point to pick up the cases after everyones guns have been cleared if protocol dictates.

Using the trigger to close the bolt takes some getting used to and is a bit unnerving at first as to some extent it goes against one of the golden rules of firearms safety. I’d imagine using this gun for CSR or practical rifle may present some challenges to conventional shooting/safety drills.

Once I’d come to terms with the fact I wasn’t going to get any accuracy testing done I just had fun with the rifle, and it’s a gun that its easy to have fun with! Although not capable of proper semi-auto speed an impressive RoF is achievable and it takes considerably less dexterity that the SGC lever release rifles. bangbang Expect to have a tired finger at the end of the day though.

Its now highly likely i'll also be getting a 9mm version too to use for IPSC gallery rifle comps :good:

A side scope mount (dedicated ACOG mount to give as low profile as possible). I did consider the picatinny back cover but figured it would take longer/be more hassle to remove for cleaning and give less chance of a repeatable zero.

As i didn't get a certain zero due to the wind, i couldn't test whether the side mount gives a repeatable zero or not :bad: Something else to check next time!

If it is designed along the same lines as an AK siderail it should give a repeatable zero every time and the optic mount will clamp in the same position each time.I use siderail mounted optics on my AKs' and Dragunovs and have never had an issue with them not retaining zero when they are removed and refitted.

ROF looks impressive but it would be nice if they were a bit cheaper.After seeing the video I can see the attraction and a Mars action AK would be a nice addition if one became available.

What is the 'cyclic' rate of fire when being used quickly?

Thanks for the info snayperskaya, one of the lads i was shooting with had his AK with him and the mount was identical apart from the optics interface. :good:

David - I didn't time it, i should have used the shot timer app i have on my phone, or at least on the video editing software but i was too excited on the range, and too tired when i was clagged those two videos together. Yet more stuff for the next range day!

Looking back at the video the fastest strings i was getting off looked like 3-3.5 rounds per second. I took the video a few magazines into the day. I would guesstimate that with a fresh finger you could get off 4, possibly 5 rounds per second. I would say true semi-auto speed with a .223 would be closer to 10.

Looks great fun these! I've got to say I fancy one in 7.62x39 would be dirt cheap to run. Very interested in the accuracy potential of these mate.!

I've had my VZ58 MARS for a few weeks now and I have to say that I absolutely love it!
Blackstuff -Could you post some photos/details of the modifications you did to your Pmags to get them to fit the magwell adaptor? And do they drop free when empty? I was holding off from fitting my magwell adaptor until I could get my hands some metal mags, but I can't see that happening for a while.

You have to cut/file off the top-right part from the back runner and you may have to file the mag latch hole at the top. Use a flat ended hobby file for this and make sure you keep the edge square so the latch still positively engages;

Cut the top of the back of the mag like this;

File the top of the mag latch hole if necessary (all of mine needed it);

I used the tip of this type of file;

My E-mags (not P-mags) drop free but my FAB Ultimag needs a slight touch for it to drop.

N.B. Just to clarify, the mod is the same with all polymer mags, i'm just not sure whether the P-mag will drop free or not
