Firearm Storage Safe Design Requirement

I have been given 2 rifle cabinets :-)

One a 2 gun the other 4. Both quote BS 7558 wotsit for safes both have 2 locks x 7 lever & are the right construction & thickness metal, both long enough for FB target rifles so 54 inch etc etc etc

Neither have internal safes for ammo or bolt. :roll:

I can use 1 because I have another safe with internal box. But if I gave the other to someone would they be able to get an FAC on the back of it?

The stds do not say a safe Must have an internal locking compartment - but a good cash box could be welded bolted in.

Do people store rifles with bolts actions fitted (safe closed) so would that be OK in these??

Just use a separate external safe. Keep ammo and firearms cabinet keys in safe.

I have two 7 gun rifle cabinets no lock tops. I have two handgun safes that I have had since handguns were allowed. I keep the rifles in the rifle cabinets. I keep ammo and the bolts in one of the handgun cabinets. The wife uses the second hand gun cabinet as a safe.

And when the police do their unannounced visit "Sorry officer but I do not have a key for that one and no idea what my wife keeps in there!"

I have a bespoke Brattonsound next to my Gun Cabinet and it stores my camera, lenses and other valuable items. My comment to the FEO was along the lines of: "nothing of interest to you" and then just to keep him happy and ensure my certs arrived quickly I opened it up!

I have two cabinets one is lock top the other not for the long barreled rifles.

I bought a digital safe to keep the ammo and the two sets of cabinet keys in, that way they are secure.

But if someone gets in the ammo safe, they then have access to ammo and your rifles...?

What is there to discuss?
Keeping the bolts in the rifles perfectly legal whether "fired off" (uncocked I take it) or left cocked. Some FEOs advise storing the bolt elsewhere but this can lead to various problems and if half the rifles in your cabinet don't have removable bolts any perceived advantage would be negligible anyway.

Ammunition (not shotgun though) is however required to be stored separately which is often satisfied by a separate compartment within the main gun cabinet. Though if someone were to gain access to the main compartment I can't see the puny locking arrangement on the inner compartment resisting even a screwdriver to lever it open. I think that perhaps it is more of a slowing down arrangement perhaps to hinder the ready access to firearms and ammunition by the gun owner in a hurry?????

Two gun cabinet then I can't see any problems if you only want to store two guns. In fact I would think that you could probably get three or four guns in such a cabinet at a push by topping and tailing. However as storing ammo in a separate compartment is a must then another ammo safe would be required.

Just a thought, if you had a separate safe to store ammunition in, is there a requirement for it to be bolted to the wall/floor? I haven't seen this part discussed before. I'm assuming it has to be.
